(Don't know your streaming subscriptions, obvs.) A very obvious recommendation is Schitts Creek on NetFlix. A less obvious one is Only Murders in the Building, a sublime whodunnit comedy series on Disney-Star+.

If you think you may enjoy some beautiful closely observed nature writing, get a copy of The Living Mountain, in which Nan Shepherd, writing during WW2, lovingly describes the Cairngorms.

It was such a joy to see you in Vienna. My son and I were there in that crowd in Gartenbaukino, because that was his birthday present to me this year.

It breaks my heart to read that you are dealing with Long Covid now. As I have written several times in my own blog, I find all accounts of Long Covid seriously alarming, because it reminds me of what we all went through together when my son (the one who was there with me in row 8) developed a rare form of recurrent viral meningitis sixteen years ago. There are no short cuts and no amount of will power or "positive thinking" will make it better. It's not you, it's our society that has to change to accommodate you and all the countless people going through the same thing.

All my sympathy and best wishes, and thank you for being you.

P.S. If you feel up to reading and want something intelligently entertaining, personally I would recommend The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells.

I just wish you all the best and that you get better as soon and quick as possible. Don't hurry. Take your time.

To read? Kae Tempest - poems, novel and "on connection". Amanda Palmers "Art of Asking". Mervyn Peake's "Gormenghast"-Trilogy...

To watch? I guess you know all this better than me (as you will know the books above, most probably). How about re-watch "Better Call Saul"? Or "Top of the Lake"?

Truly, genuinely, Murder She Wrote is a wonderful convalescence re-watch. A retired schoolteacher being the smartest person in every room, many hints towards a rich and rewarding sex life without ever wanting or needing to settle down again, travelling all over the world and being welcomed everywhere for her skills as an author rather than her looks or her fame. She wears sensible shoes and clothes while still being classy and has never had a driving licence.

I hope you are well soon. For reading i recommend some Disc World novels by Terry Pratchet. On first view just 'funny fantasy', the later ones tackle themes like racism or sexism, and how some characters deal with it.

Get well soon! We really are being dumb and cruel to just 'live with Covid' and let it strike down young healthy energetic people like you for prolonged periods. I continue to do all I can to overthrow the government ;-)

Oh I’m so sorry :( that’s awful. Sending get better wish your way.

I have heard very good things about our flag means death but haven’t had a chance to watch yet as it’s only on another subscription service here 😭 but I’ve basically been absorbed into the fandom through osmosis on tumblr 🤣

In terms of reading, may I recommend Hunger Pangs by Joy Demorra? From her tumblr:

Hunger Pangs is a queer-polyamorous-paranormal-satirical-romance series featuring vampires, werewolves, and all other manner of creatures that go bump in the night. It has been described by those who have read it as being, “like reading the queer-goth-punk love child of Terry Pratchett meets Jane Austen.”

It’s got excellent disability and neurodivergence rep, characters with all sorts of body types (as a fat woman I appreciate immensely), and just a beautiful love story at its heart. Definite comfort read.

For shows in the “you might love people after all” category try Schitt’s Creek, Ted Lasso. Call My Agent in French is also a delight. The Detectorists is low key oddball quirky and charming. NYC murder mystery quirky: Only Murders in the Building. The Queens Gambit is an all time fave drama. Giri/Haji also drama with an arty murder plot mystery twist half on Japan, half on England. If you like the dark and deadpan try Barry or even better, Patriot. These shows saved me in the pandemic. I have about a dozen more but these are the best.

Not sure which country you are in but Gentleman Jack has 3 episodes of Series 2. I have been unwell for 3 months on and off but not with Covid. Infection peaked last Saturday and finally managed to get a GP appointment (111 service said call an ambulance on input of symptoms) and some antibiotics prescribed for chest infection. Feeling much improved a week later but a bit cross that I couldn't access health services at any point since January. Could have seen a GP in 30 minutes if I had the means to pay for the heavily advertised private service at pharmacy.

I heartily recommend any and all of Becky Chambers’ books. They are genuinely caring and deeply human in the best way. Extra special mention for “A Psalm for the Wild-Built”, her most recent, which is the start of a new series.

I'm only about 15% of the way in at the moment, but Catherynne Valente's "The Glass Town Game" is really charming.

I find the "Gone Wrong Show" amazing and absorbing. I know "Peter Pan Goes Wrong" is on YouTube. I giggle so much I have to pause to breathe. "A Memory Called Empire" is the best book I've read in a few years. I hope you feel better soon!

I hope you feel better as soon as you read the supportive well-wishing from your readership. Be patient with your marvelous body that can do so much if you just allow it the time and opportunity, including to fight off any number of parasites. If not for you, then for your spouse.

Entertainment: there are earlier suggestions that are fine. If your attention span is short, then "Old Enough" currently on Netflix might fit the bill. If you haven't seen "Arcane", it's gorgeous and you don't need to be a gamer to enjoy it (my daughter nagged me into watching it and no regrets). For reading in short spurts, have you read "Bomb Shelter: Love, Time and Other Explosives" by Mary Laura Philpott? You could combine in-the-moment entertainment with some introspection or, at the least, some judgmental thinking. Whatever floats your boat and gets you well again, Ms. Famous-in-Europe ;-)

Also: "courage involves deliberate choice in the face of painful or fearful circumstances for the sake of a worthy goal". (from doi:10.1111/0047-2786.00107 ; if anyone wants a reprint, I can get it for you.) Continue to be courageous. You never know for whom you are an example.

Well, shit . . . .

Hope you feel better soon!

I think a show that might be absorbing enough (and you can get on YouTube) is Infinity Train (you really need to watch it from beginning to end, though). For some serious comedy, if you can find episodes of Swedish Dicks try that or (God help me for recommending this, but off-the-wall stuff helps me forget my troubles for a bit) Teen Titans Go! (also on YouTube).
