Staying in! Wearing lounge pants. Watching a movie. And quite happy about it. NYE is a weird holiday and I’ve been to a few very weird parties in the past and I’m quite content to go to bed early this year. Cheers to a swell year ahead!

We are with friends in Madison, WI and sadly a bit under the weather. Not Covid. But we have a one-shot DnD adventure and good company.

Love to you from us, it seems like it’s been a bit of a time for you and I hope it gets better soon. Happy New Year.

Danna and I are getting married in the coming year, so that is what I’m looking forward to. Im hoping to leave behind some extremely stupid family drama that doesn’t serve any of us.

Hello! I just read one of your articles on long-reads and just wanted to say that I love your writing and I am so glad to have read it! You are going to be a writer I aspire to be like on my journey, I hope you have a good day/evening whenever you are reading this!

I ended up staying in. On the one hand I used to get irritated by the social expectation that I "had" to go out and do something to celebrate – but this year I was a little bereft that expectation was absent. Nothing to do and no-one to do it with. Never mind!

Maybe I should leave others' expectations behind in the old year and focus on my own in 2023.

Happy New Year all!

Hi Laurie, here's hoping things will get better and nicer and sweeter soon. I wish for us all for a better 2023, period. As for your question: I hadn't done anything for New Year's in years, but this time, I went on a 3-day gathering of SFF nerds in an old castle that's now a youth hostel - a friend had told me about it. I thought it was perfect. You could play board games (they had a ridiculous amount of games), just sit around and chat, go for walks, sleep in, drink yourself delirious, attend little workshops and talks - or look at the stars on a balmy night (scarily balmy, in terms of climate change, but here we are, I enjoyed the balminess anyway). Medieval castle on a hill in Hessia, Germany: I will do that again next year!!!

Been at some Post Punk/Batcave party, that wasn't announced very publicly. Met Friends I haven't seen for a long time. Learned someone had cancer. Met some very nice people from the Ukraine. It was marvellous night, with a bit of sadness.

This was an exceptionally beautiful news years message. I very much hope all of this applied to you too and that there will be lots of light for you and your loved ones this year. One of my highlights of this (or better: last) year was seeing you live on tour :)

Thank you for this thoughtful, beautifully-crafted message. May all your expectations be met and you have smooth sailing in the coming year.

Two years from now my wife and I will be octogenarians, enjoying a comfortable retirement in pretty good health and good connections with the family. In accordance with Southern tradition we are looking forward to a New Year's Day meal tomorrow which will include collards (for folding money in the coming year), blackeyed peas (for good luck) and cornbread.

I just watched Volodymyr Zelenskyy's inspirational 17-minute message to his people and the world and am reminded how fortunate we are who live in relative peace and security. I'm sure it is easy to find. Do check it out.

I will be spending the night in my own bed, after celebrating over video with a chain of friends as the new year crosses the globe. I'm waddling to that bed now, having stuffed my face with the last of the Christmas leftovers.

I was saying to one friend how eerie it is to have such a dark Christmas season. None of my neighbours put up lights this year. But I was very happy to see the new year ushered in by some huge fireworks displays - even in this year people found ways to bring light.

I wish everyone here all the best for 2023. May it keep you safe and bring you joy and love.
